CAT’25 – A New Catechism Initiative at Providence

That’s right – get ready for Cat’25, an initiative by your session to have our whole church involved in reading & memorizing the New City Catechism during 2025!

Why are we doing this?

Well, I thought you might ask! First, this will be a great opportunity for the children of our church to build an enduring framework for knowing & understanding the key truths of the Bible;

Second, it will be a great opportunity for non-children (that is, adults of all ages!) to be reminded of the essential doctrines of the Scripture in a systematic way.

Here’s a great quote from Collin Hansen, who writes for The Gospel Coalition:

… catechesis is an irreplaceable way to help your children escape the tyranny of self and the urgency of now. They must know there is something, Someone, outside the self. And they must learn to doubt the wisdom of this age. Expose them, at the earliest age you can, to the good and perfect, so they will learn to discern all counterfeits. Give them a better story than what they’ll inevitably get from the world. Give them the name of God, and tell him what he’s like.

Please join us in praying that God would use Cat’25 to strengthen us all in the “faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3) and raise up the next generation to know & love Jesus.

Yours faithfully,

– Pastor Mark

The New City Catechism app, available for iPhone, iPad, and Android, offers easy access to all 52 catechism questions and answers.

Each includes an ESV Scripture reading, a short prayer, and devotional commentary from notable contemporary pastors (like John Piper, Timothy Keller, and Kevin DeYoung) and historical figures (such as Augustine, John Calvin, and Martin Luther).

The app also features kid-friendly songs to help children memorize the catechism. The app is free to use.

The New City Catechism web app makes it easy to take all 52 questions and answers right here in your computer browser – check it out:

As we begin the New City Catechism curriculum at church, we want to highlight two helpful resources:

  • The New City Catechism book is a clear guide for adults and older kids, with devotionals and Scripture for each question.
  • The New City Catechism for Kids makes learning fun for younger children with illustrations and songs. Both books are great companions to our curriculum—check them out to enhance your learning experience!
